As well being the world’s smallest breeds, the Chihuahua is one of the most popular. A recent report by Rover.com places it at #10. Previously though, it was even higher! What then is the secret of its enduring appeal?
Well, it looks like a mixture of cuteness, personality, and its pretty low-maintenance disposition are all reasons for this.
They are originally from Mexico, it is possible that Christopher Columbus was the first person first to bring Chihuahuas to Europe. In fact, many of Mexico’s citizens celebrate the Chihuahua on Cinco do Mayo. US citizens seem to do this even more. In the states of Colorado and Arizona there are Chihuahua races on this day.
Often entertaining, loyal and with big personalities, Chihuahuas live quite a long time. They don’t need too much exercise, but are very agile (they frequently compete in dog events). On the other hand, Chihuahuas are not the easiest dogs to train. Owners need to be firm and apply a training routine. Without this, Chihuahuas, can become unruly and show their aggression in public. This may explain that they are very popular dogs to own, they aren’t always popular with the public.
Giving the right amount of affection alongside firm attention is important. In early housebreaking days, doing this will adjust a Chihuahua, according to its natural temperament. It might take more effort to do this than the average dog, though.
Chihuahuas tend to be loyal dogs, and really don’t mind travelling. Once properly trained, your Chihuahua will only need a walk a day, and a small amount of grooming. This helps make it a dog of choice for the busy, urban person.
