Go further down the rabbit hole with Matrix Resurrections

While we tend to focus on dog and cat related stuff, here at WUFMAG, it doesn’t stop us from rabbiting(!) on about other things of interest, in this case the forthcoming Matrix Resurrections movie.

Due for release on December 22nd is the hotly-anticipated forth installment in the Matrix series. It reunites actor Keanu Reeves with director Lana Wachowski of the 1999 original The Matrix.

Its official trailers have caused a stir, and a few theories. Let’s take a look.

WHITE RABBITS

Speaking of bunnies, as well as various visual references to Alice in Wonderland, you can hear Jefferson Airplane’s 1967 psychedelic classic White Rabbit playing at the beginning of trailer one.

Interestingly, this old band’s first gigs in San Francisco were at a club called the Matrix. The group’s former guitarist Jorma Kaukanen recently commented in reaction to seeing the promo clip:

“We started in the Matrix…Glad to be there again!”

Jorma Kaukanen – in Rolling Stone

The film itself was filmed in San Francisco, so the location reference (via the song) is unlikely just random.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND

As a many of you probably know, one of 1999’s The Matrix‘ big influences was Lewis Carroll – or at least his children’s classics Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Similarly, White Rabbit is beyond a mere homage. It references characters and incidents from these Victorian stories involving a young girl lost in a fantasy world. ‘One pill makes you taller, the next one makes you small..’, sang Grace slick – and like Alice, The Matrix also involved pills – blue ones!

MATRIX RESURRECTIONS FAN THEORIES.

Along with all this this altered reality, there have been array of fan theories. Many have been in response to the Matrix Resurrections trailers. We can see central character Neo (Keanu Reeves) wired to the Matrix, reliving previous experiences. References to The Matrix and its sequels have clearly worked in creating anticipation. As ‘teasers’, these promos seem aware of the various fan theories that abound. One of these involves the character Trinity. Her appearance in the trailers has prompted fans to ask why she there, when she was supposed to have died – at the end of the previous sequel.

Another among many theories that fans have discussed in response to the trailer, is the idea that Neo and John Wick are one and the same.

Reacher is the subject of another film played by Reeves, and fans have noticed the similarity in appearance – for the first time in the Matrix series sporting a beard. Those of you who have seen John Wick will know – he is out to avenge his dog. We have no idea if Matrix Resurrections will feature any pooches, but we did notice this casting call from 2 years ago.

So what’s it all about? Who knows! (well, hopefully we all will after December 22nd – Matrix Resurrections release date). If you are a dog owner you may be interested in our themed monthly boxes of goodies for boxes for dogs. January’s will be all about Alice in Wonderland.
