Halloween Costumes For You and Your Dog

By Martha Watton

Finding a costume for Halloween is always a fun challenge, but it’s even more exciting when you can match your dog! Snap some Instagram photos and show off your creativity – your pup will definitely turn some heads. We’ve rounded up some amusing ideas ranging from full-on outfits to small accessories for top human and sidekick duos that are sure to impress at any spooky party.

Always measure your dog before buying any pre-made costumes to ensure a comfortable fit,and remove any clothing immediately if they show signs of distress.

BATMAN & ROBIN

Iconic superhero duo, DC Comics’ Batman and Robin, are perfect partners in crime. They first appeared together for the first time in Detective Comics #38 in 1940. Robin’s unique outfit was inspired by the legendary hero Robin Hood. This requires a little more effort and won’t be suitable for dogs who aren’t comfortable wearing clothes, as it does involve quite a sophisticated costume. However, do it right, and your furry sidekick will help you keep those scary Halloween streets safe.

SCOOBY-DOO & SHAGGY

Scoobert aka. Scooby-Doo is the fictional Great Dane mascot of the Mystery Inc. crew. Like most dogs, he will only help his friends go after villains with the lure of treats and scooby snacks. He is also constantly hungry and scared easily – remind you of anyone? This costume is ideal if your pup doesn’t enjoy dressing up.  All you need is a blue-green collar and a tag with the initials ‘SD’ emblazoned on it. For the human, Shaggy is, of course, Scooby’s best friend, but any member of the mystery crew would do – for you, your dog, and a group of your friends too!

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD & THE BIG BAD WOLF

A classic folktale, the story of Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf has been around from as early as the 11th century. A little girl visits her grandmother, only to find that she has been eaten by a wolf who’s now disguised himself in grandma’s clothes!

To turn your dog into a scary grandma wolf, all you need is an old nightgown, a bonnet and a set of glasses. Pair this with a human in a classic red riding hood costume, and you’ve got a hilarious duo bound to cause some laughs!

DOROTHY & TOTO

Whisk yourselves away down the yellow brick road with this adorable and easy Halloween costume. In The Wizard of Oz, published in 1900, Toto is Dorothy’s beloved pet and only friend. They played together all day and went on many adventures, just like you and your fluffy companion. In the books, Toto was described as a ‘little black dog with long silky hair,’ with no breed being specified. For the 1939 film adaptation, he is played by a 125 per day! This costume would be great for smaller dogs who are happy to be carried, whilst humans can get dolled up in their ruby red slippers.

LITTLE BO PEEP & HER SHEEP

The origins of this classic English nursery rhyme date back as far as the 16th century, with Shakespeare referencing a children’s game of ‘Bo-Peep’ in the play King Lear. It tells the story of a sheep-keeper who fell asleep and thus lost all her sheep! This is a super cute and simple option, especially if your pooch happens to be particularly fluffy! Go the extra mile and use pet-safe non-toxic fur dye to colour their paws black and complete the look. Dress as a shepherd with a curved staff, and get ready to round up your herd!

MICKEY MOUSE & PLUTO

Pluto is one of the biggest stars in the Disney universe, appearing in 89 short films between 1930 and 1953 as Mickey Mouse’s pet. Unlike his co-stars, Minnie, Mickey, Goofy, Daisy and Donald – Pluto doesn’t speak. He expresses his personality through animation, not dialogue.  This makes him a pioneering figure in the industry. If your dog isn’t fond of wearing clothing, this is the ideal costume as it only requires a green collar. Dress as Mickey or get a whole group to play the Disney characters, and you’ll be the stars of the show!
